LOVE ON MAIN is an anthology of short stories by me and nine other amazing authors, all featuring Hallmark-movie-like romances that take place on Main Street America. My story, “Culture Clash on Main,” takes place in Rock Hill, South Carolina, at the start of the characters’ senior year of high school. Here’s a quick peek:

In an attempt to avoid his clingy ex, star quarterback Michael Bradford darts into a new Indian Café on Main Street and runs into Shreya Sanghani. He can’t stop fumbling his words around her--leaving her less than thrilled by his well-meaning but insensitive comments. When he’s paired with her for a class assignment, cultures aren’t the only things clashing.

Here’s my character interview with both Michael and Shreya. Enjoy and Happy Hopping!

Shaila: Michael, Shreya, so glad you’re here! Why don’t you start by telling our readers how you two met.

Shreya: Well, he sorta ran into my mom’s café one night while trying to hide from someone. <laughs>

Shaila: Aw, how cute. Romantic, even.

Michael: <scratching behind his ear> It might have been, but uh…I didn’t end up making the best of impressions.

Shaila: Really?

<Michael and Shreya glance at each other>

Shreya: Yeaaah, well, after about twenty minutes of us, uh… <shrugs and blushes>

Michael: <grins> Flirting?

Shreya: <rolls eyes and bites back smile> Um, okay. Flirting. His ex-girlfriend spotted us and charged in after him.

Michael: She was the one I’d been trying to dodge. Long story.

Shreya: <nods> Well, she wasn’t very…pleasant toward me. She made some racially insensitive comments under the guise of being “nice,” and it kinda ruined the evening.

Michael: <wraps arm around Shreya> And I didn’t really set my ex straight. I even said something that added to it, making it worse. It was unintentional of course, but when you hurt someone, you hurt someone. I had to own up to that. <whispers something in Shreya’s ear>

Shreya: <responds to Michael in a whisper> I know. Water under the bridge.

<Michael kisses Shreya’s temple>

Shaila: Sorry, don’t mean to eavesdrop, but “water under the bridge”? How’d you two overcome all that?

Michael: It wasn’t easy, of course, but luckily we paired up for a class assignment—

Shreya: After he practically begged me on his knees. Awkward.

Michael: <sputters> Okay, sure. I’ll grant you that I begged, but I was on my knees because we were cleaning up your spilled coffee! <Shreya giggles> Anyway, after what happened at the café, I wanted to make amends, so I, uh…

<Shreya looks down and rolls her lips between her teeth>

Michael: <clears throat> I chased after her at the end of class and messed everything up even more.

Shaila: Even more?

Shreya: <widens her eyes and nods>

Michael: <sighs> Oh yeah. She was pissed.

Shaila: What happ—?

Shreya: I’d rather not relive it. Let’s just say it took some time to get over the HEARTACHE, but I did.

Shaila: How? <glances back and forth at them>

Michael: <shrugs> I learned about microaggressions, and we talked.

Shreya: <leans forward> We communicated.

Shaila: Microaggressions?

Michael: Yeah, you know, saying things that are insulting because they’re based on race or even other biases. I know. Heavy.

Shaila: <narrows eyes> And after talking about it, everything was okay?

<Michael and Shreya burst into laughter>

Shreya: Um…not exactly. There was a lot more to it. <grins at Michael>

Michael: <eyes soften> Yeah, but it was worth it.
